OSBA Workshop

SOESC Host Newly Elected School Board Members

In collaboration with the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA), the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center (SOESC) hosted newly elected school board members from Clinton-Massie, East Clinton, Miami Trace, Washington Court House, Bright, Fairfield, Greenfield, Hillsboro, and Lynchburg-Clay Schools. On December 1, 2011, newly elected school board members attended a workshop led by Cheryl Ryan, OSBA’s Deputy Director of School Board Services.  The three hour workshop focused on the following issues related to successful school boards:

  • Board member roles and responsibilities
  • Best practices as a board member
  • Best practices of the leadership team and Superintendent/Treasurer relations
  • Board member ethics and conflicts
  • Board member code of conduct and operational agreements
  • Transparent and open communication

Eleven newly elected board members, two veteran board members, two school treasurers, and three superintendents attended the workshop.

In addition, Tony Long, Superintendent with the SOESC, shared information about the services offered by the SOESC through a collaborative shared service model for the school districts located throughout Adams, Clinton, Fayette and Highland Counties.

Mr. Long remarked, “My experience has shown me that successful school districts are led by high quality and highly effective school board members.  This training was a great opportunity to learn from OSBA and to network with other area school board members.  This workshop was an important first step in preparing school board members for this tremendous public service opportunity.”
