National Geographic Bee

Blanchester and Clinton- Massie Middle Schools recently held school-level competitions of the National Geographic Bee.  The bee is held to encourage the teaching and study of geography.

The Preliminary Competition, conducted in the middle grade Social Studies classrooms earlier in the fall, consisted of seven rounds.  All students were required to answer questions about topics such as U.S and World Geography; historic places; continents and climates; and cultural and economic geography.

Top scoring students were then named as finalists to the school-level competition held in front of the student body and parents.

Each school winner was administered a written qualifying test to determine eligibility for the state level competition.  Schools will be notified in March if winners will advance to the next level.  State winners are invited to National Geographic headquarters in late May to compete in the national finals for scholarships in the amount of U.S. $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000.

Gifted Intervention Specialists, Joyce Kelly and Carol Foell, coordinated the district competitions.  Social Studies teachers, Michelle Kirkendall, Kurt Ballinger, Michelle Elston, Betsy Wellman, Mike Adams, and Jim Wagner served as judges.
